A few weeks back, in advance of Ad Age's Social Engagement/Social TV Conference in New York, I was talking to Mark Ghuneim, founder and CEO of Trendrr, the social-media monitoring firm. I wanted to know just how much "social TV" -- the intersection of social media and TV -- had grown year-over-year in terms of consumer adoption. Mark ended up presenting some data at SE/STV showing that social activity (including tweets, Facebook updates and check-ins) surrounding broadcast prime-time TV increased by 194% from April 2011 to April 2012 -- nearly quadrupling in volume.

Not magic, motion control: The Leap controls your computer with a flick of a finger

Anyone who has wanted to point their finger at their computer to make something happen will appreciate the Leap, a new motion control peripheral from startup Leap Motion. The small aluminum device uses finger waves and hand gestures to interact with operating systems and computer programs.

Thanks to Microsoft’s Kinect, motion control has gained more popularity and better precision in recent years. While the creators of the Leap, David Holz and Michael Buckwald, admired the Kinect’s motion sensing abilities, they knew they could create a much more precise device in a tinier package.

Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase & Co. is a serving member of the board of the Federal Reserve Bank.

Dimon was given his seat on the Fed’s board in 2007. He has enjoyed his position throughout the financial crisis that his and several other mega-banks have caused through irresponsible behavior on the global stock market.

Dimon is not the only banking executive to serve two masters.

Along with Dimon, the New York Fed board includes CEO’s from Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, Solway Bank, heads of Macy’s Department Store, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and representatives from Columbia University.

Chinese company buys U.S. movie theater chain AMC for $2.6 Billion

This is an interesting acquisition to say the least, especially considering AMC is an acronym for "American-Multi Cinema"...

One to watch: Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group Company has bought AMC movie theaters for $2.6 billion

 

The second-largest U.S. movie theater chain has been bought by a Chinese company today in a historic takeover. 


AMC Entertainment Holdings was sold for $2.6 billion to Dalian Wanda Group Company in a setback to President Obama's attempts to prevent American businesses being eclipsed by their Chinese rivals.

Wanda said the deal would create the world's biggest movie theater operator and the Beijing-based company revealed it would invest an additional $500 million in AMC's development.

SpaceX rocket blasts off, ‘new era’ of private spaceflight begins

After a failed launch SaturdaySpaceX successfully launched a private unmanned spaceship early this morning on a mission to the International Space Station.

SpaceX hopes replace now-retired American Space Shuttles with missions to space. Eventually the private company hopes to send humans into space, but it’s starting by sending cargo to the ISS.

The company’s Falcon 9 rocket blasted off carrying a Dragon capsule at a 3:44 a.m. launch in Cape Canaveral, Fla. NASA was enthusiastic about the launch and its prospects for the future.
